Students of literature, arts and history prefer to format their academic papers in the Notes-Bibliography system, whereas students of social sciences and sciences prefer the Author-Date method.
The Notes-Bibliography system of referencing
In this system, you have to provide the details of your references in the endnotes of footnotes. For every direct quote, paraphrase, or summary you use in your paper, a superscript number is assigned . At the end of each page where you include these numbers, you must provide details of all the references in chronological order. If your paper contains a bibliography, you can skip out on the details of the source in the footnotes . However, if you do not have a bibliography section, it is vital to mention all relevant information in the footnote itself .
The Author-Date system of referencing
In the case of the author-date system of the style, you can exclude the footnotes entirely. All you have to do is include the author’s last name and the year of publication in parenthesis as an in-text citation. At the end of the paper, there has to be a section called Reference list where you list out the details of all the references you used in your writing . This includes all necessary information of the source, such as the author’s name, titles of books and journals and the publication information in the reference list .
The Chicago referencing style has its pros and cons as well. Even though the lack of information in in-text citations makes it easier for the reader to go through your paper, a detailed footnote can be challenging when the page breaks.
